Shady Grove Garden Project

Shady Grove Garden Project

Get involved with Carthay Center Elementary School! Improve your gardening knowledge! The asphalt has been ripped out, and the ground is ripe!

Saturday and Sunday, November 15 and 16, we will be planting Strawberries, Raspberries, Grapes, Onions and Garlic.  We'll also be improving and adding to our existing gardens, including transplanting, amending soil, trimming, installing drip irrigation, and even pouring concrete to install a new Garden Bulletin Board.

The Los Angeles Conservation Corps will be assisting with the planting of sixteen Cassia Leptophylla (pictured) on the 16th.

This is a chance to personally improve Carthay Center Elementary School. We need team leaders as well as garden hands. And gardening experience isn't necessary - there will be experts on hand to teach us.

Please email Teresa Dahl, Friends of Carthay Center Garden Chairperson, to volunteer, learn more, or to find out other ways you can help this garden grow.

Donate Your Child's Old Tricycle

The Carthay Center Kindergarten playground could use a few more tricycles in their collection.  If you've got a tricycle to donate, please contact Friends of Carthay Center Community Outreach Chairperson Susan Nickerson.

Carthay Center PTA

There’s a lot going on with the Carthay Center PTA!  If you have not joined the Carthay PTA, please do. Membership is only $7 per person and forms are available in the front office or the Parent Center and on this website.  PTA raises money for expenses related to school field trips and other educational and academic needs at Carthay.  And every expenditure is approved by PTA members, so you are part of the decision-making process!  Supporting your PTA is supporting all of the children at Carthay!  For more info, please contact Maira Gomez , PTA Vice President and Membership Chairperson.

Coffee with the Principal

Sponsored by the Carthay PTA, Coffee with the Principal is an opportunity for parents to sit down with Principal Gwen McGee to discuss school issues.  It is always a stimulating session, with great questions and answers. Please join us for this once a month event!  The next Coffee with the Principal will be on Friday, October 17 at 8:30 AM in the Cafetorium.

STAR Enrichment Classes

Carthay Center Elementary is proud to provide STAR Education after school. STAR Education has been selected as a model program by the White House and the U.S. Department of Education. In addition to the regular after-school program, STAR offers a variety of reasonably priced 8-10 week enrichment courses at Carthay, open to all students. STAR classes and programs are designed to encourage kids to explore, grow, encounter the world, and expand their cultural base.
